From the Ruhr Valley to the Steel City: Industrial Scenes from the Rhineland Industrial Museum

This exhibition is comprised of over thirty works of art on loan from the collection of the Rhineland Industrail Museum, Oberhausen, Germany. Thirty of these paintings, works on paper, and photographs were shown along side the Westmoreland's traveling exhibition, Born of Fire: The Valley of Work, when it was hosted by that museum in 2006. Bringing this collection to our museum allows our audience the rare opportunity to view works of art made by artists of the Ruhr River Valley of Germany where the concentrated industrial environment paralleled that of Pittsburgh's indutrial corridor during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The exhibition allows for comparisons of style and subject matter between American and German artists as well as contrasting their differences in approach to that subject matter. |

To launch our Fiftieth Anniversary celebrations in 2009, The Westmoreland will mount an exhibition celebrating our history as the repository for southwestern Pennsylvania artists. Dedicated in memory of founding Westmoreland director Paul A. Chew, the focus is on landscape and still life paintings that have come to light in recent years culled from the Museum's recent purchases and numberous private collections in the area. These paintings shed further light on the artists of the Scalp Level School. Many major works have been rediscovered through heightened interest in this field at aution houses and galleries. As more attention is paid to these painters and as the descendants and original owners pass away, more and more paintings become available to be shared with the public for the first time, in many cases, since they left the artists' studios. |
